The Paint Place Abaco celebrates 24 years of CULTURE, COMMUNITY & COLOR
“When you want to paint it right the first time”
The Paint Place, a Maura Family Business, is exactly what its name suggests: a place where you go to buy paint. Upon further inspection, however, one finds that it’s a company which stands for so much more than priming walls and applying topcoats.
Started in 1993 by Michael Maura Sr., The Paint Place expanded nine years later, opening a store in Marsh Harbour, Abaco on October 15th, 2002.
When we arrived here, we were intentional about where we chose to establish our business. We recognized the importance of local involvement and understood that becoming part of a close-knit and growing community meant doing more than simply opening our doors. It meant listening, learning, participating, and building meaningful relationships.
Then, in 2019 that store experienced total loss when Hurricane Dorian ravaged the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. Like many businesses, The Paint Place had to close its doors. Eighteen (18) months later March 2021, those doors reopened in the same location it has occupied in the Abaco Shopping Plaza on Don Mackay Blvd.
The reopening was a testament of our confidence in Abaco’s economy and our commitment and contribution to the community. The renovated 4000 square foot showroom showcases our wide selection of Benjamin Moore and Richard's Paints.
In addition to offering premium products at affordable prices, The Paint Place’s outstanding customer service has always been at the forefront! Our local sales team will visit job sites, write specifications for your project at no cost and will also assist with product knowledge, color matching and price quotes for special projects.
With the Covid-19 pandemic striking just six months after Hurricane Dorian, this Abaco reopening was not a guarantee. Like so many other businesses, there were significant financial setbacks, however, The Paint Place had more than one reason to push to the finish line and reopen the Abaco store.
In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, The Paint Place management focused on relocating and stabilizing their seven Abaco employees and their families. All employees were brought to New Providence, guaranteed jobs in one of the two Nassau locations, and supported as they tried to put together the pieces of a puzzle they never anticipated.
Ashana Cornish- Thervil was promoted to manage the day-to-day operation. It was important that we create opportunities for advancement and the potential for growth first from within. Ashana has done well and she continues to lead her team. Head of the Paint Department, Kendal Kemp, is the paint specialist and has been with the company since inception 24 years ago. The team is supported by Shamere Mckenzie, Gordon Dean, Tatyana Sidor and Neanaro Nicolls.
General Manager Christine King-Wallen is quick to point out that the success of the business is much more than financial performance, our philosophy was simple, “we won’t just benefit from the community, we will contribute to it.”
At its core, The Paint Place is built around three guiding tenets: Care for Employees, Customer Service, and Community Involvement. These are not simply words, they shape how the business operates, how decisions are made, and how success is ultimately measured.
-
Care for Employees comes first. Christine firmly believes that a strong business begins with a strong, engaged team. Creating an environment where employees feel valued, respected, supported, and given opportunities to grow is an important part of the company’s culture. That commitment to its people has helped foster loyalty, accountability, and a genuine sense of pride in the organization.
-
Customer Service. She emphasizes the importance of building relationships rather than simply completing transactions. Understanding customers, responding to their needs, and consistently delivering a high level of service have been fundamental to earning trust and developing long-standing customer relationships. The expectation is that every interaction should reflect the standards and values of the business.
-
Community Involvement completes the picture. Christine sees the business as an active member of the communities in which it operates, with a responsibility for contributing and giving back. Supporting local initiatives, organizations, and causes is therefore not viewed as an add-on to the business, it is an important part of who the company is and the role it wants to play.
Together, these three tenets have created a culture centered on people, relationships, and responsibility. They provide a consistent foundation for the organization today and how it will continue growing in the future.
As we celebrate our 24th anniversary, we do so under the theme “Culture, Community & Color.” These words represent much more than a celebration. They reflect the journey we have shared since 2002, honoring the culture that welcomed us, celebrating the community that has grown alongside us, and recognizing the color, vibrancy, and diversity that make this community special.

Some of the activities planned to commemorate the anniversary include:
- 24% storewide discount, excluding net-priced items
- Contractor Appreciation Day
- Art Competition featuring paintings of significant indigenous symbols of Abaco, such as the Abaco Parrot and the Abaco Lighthouse
- In-store Spin & Win promotion
- Adoption and beautification of a roundabout
- Donation of paint and painting services for a senior citizens’ home
These gestures are expressions of the relationship. In many ways, it speaks for itself.

After 24 years, our commitment remains the same: to leave the community better than we find it, and to continue building something meaningful that will endure for generations to come.
So, come on down to The Paint Place as we celebrate our 24th year of
Culture, Community and Color.
